Hello
I'm Jessi Smith. The owner/creator of The Fringe.
The first question I get, is "What's with the name?" Let me explain.
First, the definition of fringe:
noun
-
the border or outer edges of an area or group.
-
a decorative border of hanging threads left loose or formed into tassels or twists, used to edge clothing or material. (hair)
adjective
not part of the mainstream; unconventional, peripheral, or extreme.
verb
decorate (clothing or material) with a fringe.

The explanation:
The Fringe is located on the outer edge of Manitowoc.
Those that know me, know that personally I am not part of the mainstream. The way I've explained, is that I am also on the fringe between classy and sassy.
The Fringe is also another term for bangs, so it all ties together for the perfect name.
I encourage you to come find out for yourself!
My Story
I've been doing hair since I was a child. I remember curling my mom's hair for her when I was about 7 years old. I learned how to french braid in the mirror, and accidentally learned how to do it inside out. It wasn't long after that age that my teenage sister's boyfriend let me help shave his mohawk. Then came the 90s Punky Colors phase, and I was hooked.
It took many years for me to get the guts to go to school for hair, but when I finally did I knew it was a good choice. I got my license in 2010 and was very fortunate to get a job at an amazing salon in my town. I learned about techniques and products with an amazing team and grew alot in the first few years.
I explored a few different careers, and went back to school again to earn an Associates Degree in Human Resources. Again, more exploring to find out where I belong.
This past year has been a wild ride as the operations manager at a large restaurant and event hall. I realized I needed my nights and weekends back for more time at home. I'd missed a lot in the last year and the restaurant industry is brutal for family time. I love the rush of a busy Saturday night, but hate missing out on family activities. One day, while talking to my husband, the opportunity was presented to open my own salon. My first thought was "OH hell no.. no way.. I can't do it. I don't know how." And as the ever supporting, amazing husband he is, he said, "You'll figure it out. You figure out everything else, so why not?" And next thing you know, The Fringe was born.

I also enjoy graphic design, which I've been blessed to express through Smithfaced Designs. I make custom shirts, koozies, decals, and etched glass items right in the salon.

My husband and I have 3 children. 1 daughter, and 2 sons, (24, 17, 14). My daughter and her fiancé have blessed our family with two little boys (3 and 4). We also have a dog and 3 cats. Our children, parents, and some amazing friends have been the greatest support system, helping with everything they can and pushing me to take the leap and do something extraordinary.
So here we go, let 'er rip tater chip!
